Spelling to Communicate

Spelling to Communicate, or S2C, is considered an Augmented and Alternative Communication (AAC) system for individuals with no or thin speaking abilities. A stencil letter board, posture and motor coordination to choose letters fluidly are important features of this system. Much has been learned about the condition called Apraxia. Apraxia impairs the ability to complete purposeful movements with one’s body. Speaking requires the brain to filter input from all the senses to perform a refined coordination of the speaking apparatus of the body.  This clouds the true  competence and agency of the individual and limits their ability to share knowledge with the world. The good news is that using Spelling with the alphabet to learn to communicate has allowed Spellers to tell us about their life on the inside. Their own words have come to dispel myths about incompetence, and low motivation. The mantra of the Spellers movement is now “Presume Competence.”

Integrated Listening Systems (iLs)

Integrated Listening Systems is a multi-sensory program for improving brain function. The vestibular system is a sensory apparatus in the inner ear that maintains balance, spatial orientation, and gaze stability by detecting head motion and position. A fluid performance by the vestibular system is essential to learning and behavior. DDLD uses it hand in hand with other strategies.  By pairing filtered music-listening with movement activities, information is integrated more fully within a “whole body” focus rather than a passive listening experience. Integrated Listening Systems enlarges both cognitive skills and muscle memory by addressing sensory processing from the inside using enjoyable sounds and activities on the outside. Research is available on request showing increased self-regulation, increased muscle tone and improved sleep patterns.

Tutoring

Tutoring in-person or online begins with shared personal observations, IEP -styled goals, assessment s, and relationship (aka, trust). These may be related to academics, social skills, or the arts. It may include creating adaptations for specific learning needs, organizing student work habits and supplementary skill building activities that maintain engagement and link learning to broader life goals. Collaborating with other teachers and therapists or serving as an advocate for you in your home or school meetings is welcomed. Just ask.

Coaching

Coaching includes job and career exploration, skills assessment in your chosen field and breaking down skills into achievable steps necessary for success. It may mean holding person-centered planning (PCP) meetings with your support team to round out your vision. Your learning design may include resume writing and mock interview practice, online resources such as Etsy or other small business ventures as well as identifying and meeting with employers in person or virtually.  THINK BIG!

Assessments

Assessments and questionnaires are our friends. They clear the path so we can see our way to success. They provide a starting point for working on things like sensory processing, functional living skills, social skills, and academics. Assessments by their nature illuminate the criteria for learning in any subject, providing resource ideas and directions on how to get to the next level.
